During our last visit to Colombia we have been focused on consolidating our relationship with the small producers with whom we started working last year in Huila. Elver Novoa belongs to this small party of producers that are trying to change their methodology looking for new techniques to improve the quality. So much so, that he was the champion of the last championship held in his region. Thanks to the relationship that we have forged, Elver has been rewarded for the quality of his coffee, taking out a higher profit -more than double- than he would receive working with the commercial market. Therefore, as a commitment, we have bought almost the entire production of his farm. As if that were not enough, Elver also invested part of his income in the improvement of his facilities and he build a new coffee dryer.

The farm is located at the top of a hill at 1,830 masl in the village of Las Mercedes, municipality of Guadalupe (Huila). The only way to get to the plantation, we must descend a steep slope. The landscape is spectacular by the heights and the great number of hills, that lodge a great diversity. The place also has a great abundance of water. Elver has several mixed varietals in his land, although Bourbon and Colombia are the ones that grow mainly. It also has a dwarf variety that aims to be a low-sized Colombia variety. Due to its location, the farm usually receives a lot of sunlight and, although the temperatures at night are very low, during the day they can reach the 20ºC.

The benefit area is located right next to the house. It has a pulper, cement fermentation tanks and a high solar dryer with openings to boost the flow of air at times, when the temperature is too high. After a manual harvest with a selection of the ripe cherries, the coffee is depulped and fermented in tanks. Once we reach the optimum fermentation point, the coffee is washed and taken to the solar dryer, where it will be reposing around 20 days until the coffee has the proper humidity.

It’s important to us that every person, being one link in the value chain, receives a fair return for the work they put in.

We do not pay prices that are dictated by the stock market but make sure the amount we pay, reflects the quality of the lots that we buy. In some cases, that can amount to 5 or even 10 times the price at world market level.
