Ethiopia is considered the origin where coffee began, but despite this accolade, it is common for most coffee lots not to be single varietals, which is standard at other origins. Demand for speciality grade coffee is changing this structure, with more varietals being given names, as farmers see opportunity to demand a better price for single farm / single varietal coffee lots.
Why this Coffee?
We always check out the full range from Kayon Mountain each season, with a wide range of washed and natural lots on offer. However, this is the first season we have actually bought a coffee from there, as there are so many Ethiopian coffees on offer and we tend to avoid the big names and explore letter known farms. That said, this coffee jumped out a mile and we decided to take our first dip into Kayon territory.
Suke Kebele stood out as a pretty special lot, demonstrating how a natural coffee can be well processed and complex, and not just intense and fermented. As an espresso it has a big blueberry flavour with a wine gum texture, while as a filter it is more blueberries and strawberries with a rich floral mouth feel.
About the Region / Farms / Producer:
Kayon Mountain is privately owned by Ato Esmael and his family. The farm is situated in the southern part of Ethiopia in the Oromia region, Guji Zone about 320 miles from the capital city, Addis Ababa. Established in 2012; Kayon has become synonymous with great quality and experimental coffees over the last few seasons. Kayon have been responsible for pushing the boundaries of Ethiopian coffee, refining growing and processing standards.
Due to their size (240 hectares), infrastructure (their own washing station since 2015) and vast experience (background in operations and management), they have the platform to greatly improve the standard of coffee from this origin. In the process they have created jobs, raised coffee prices and improved working standards.
