Francisco Morales has operated the farm La Esperanza in Cipresales for more than 40 years, and much has been achieved during this period.
Like many others, the first few years were very challenging. Thanks to the hard work and steadfastness of the whole family, the farm has grown into an industry that provides income for the entire household as well as providing jobs to the surrounding areas. The name La Esperanza, which can be translated into ‘Hope’, says part about how important coffee production has to the family.
Fransisco is the type that never feels taught. He is very eager to hear about other people’s experiences and try out new methods on the farm when it comes to wet turbine or drought. He is curious and shows great interest in constantly improving the quality of coffee. That is why he has won several awards during the Huehuetenango Highland competition. This year he has shaded the coffee in order to control the drying process, improve the taste and increase the shelf life.
